Start Early at Palo Duro Canyon State Park

To start off the family guide right, arrive early at Palo Duro Canyon State Park in the morning to beat the heat. Grab a park map at the Visitor Center and ask about any trail conditions.

Hike the Juniper, CCC, or Lighthouse Trail

The Juniper Trail is a 2-mile (1 hour) round-trip hike that is family-friendly and offers great views without too much elevation gain. If you’re up for a longer trek, the Lighthouse Trail (5.7 miles round-trip) offers stunning views and can be manageable for families with older kids.

LUNCH

Lunch at the Sad Monkey Mercantile

Just outside Palo sure Canyon’s gate is a local favorite, Sad Monkey Mercantile. They offer everything for the happy camper: food trucks, restaurant, bar, coffee shop, grocery store, and retailer of camping gear, homewares, and “Panhandle Proud” merchandise. It’s dog friendly, kid friendly and you might even get up close to an iconic Texas longhorn.

AFTERNOON

Afternoon Hike

After lunch, cool down a bit by taking an easier trail and hike to the park’s Big Cave. For families with older kids and a little more energy, hike the Rock Garden Trail — a local favorite that hike’s from the base to the rim of the canyon.

EVENING

Dinner at Feldman’s Wrong Way Diner

For a casual menu with something for everyone try Feldman’s. You can’t go wrong with the Tortuga’s Chicken or a classic burger.

Texas Outdoor Musical (Seasonal)

After dinner, if you’re visiting in the summer, don’t miss the famous Texas Outdoor Musical, held at the outdoor amphitheater in Palo Duro Canyon. It’s an entertaining show about Texas history, complete with live music, dancing, and fireworks. It attracts people from all over the world so advanced tickets are required.

Coffee & Pastries at Palace Coffee Company

Grab a morning coffee at Palace Coffee Company, known for its artisan brews, pastries, and welcoming atmosphere.

Visit the Farmer’s Market (Seasonal)

Visit the local Farmer’s Market on the downtown historic square to support local growers, artisans, and bakers. The market is a local favorite, and connects community and producers through commerce and education.

LUNCH

Lunch at Joe Taco

After the museum, grab a bite at Joe Taco, a vibrant Mexican restaurant with a wide range of tacos, burritos, and Texas-Mex specialties. If the weather permits, we recommend sitting on the patio.

Check Out the Burrowing Owl Bookstore

Just a short walk across the historic downtown square is Burrowing Owl Bookstore, a locally owned, imaginative escape full of new and used books for all ages.

AFTERNOON

Horseback Ride or Jeep Tour (call ahead, tickets required)

For a unique perspective on the Canyon, consider a guided horseback ride or Jeep Tour through the canyon. 1hr, 2hr, and 3hr options are available as you explore the picturesque backlands of the canyon.

Canyon Aqua Park (seasonal, advanced ticket required)

The CAP is family-focused water park to swim, eat and laugh with your friends and family. Since its’ opening in 2017, the CAP has been known as the “go-to” waterpark in the Texas Panhandle. With over 55,000 guests each summer the CAP has become a major recreational venue in this region. Get advanced tickets here.

Dinner at Buff’s

For a casual menu featuring burgers, cherry limeades, and fried pies, Buff’s is great spot after a long day of exploring. Oh, and don’t forget to let the kids check out the sandbox!
