Get a Taste of Student Life

Spend the morning walking around the beautiful campus of WTAMU. Explore on-campus housing, tour landmarks like Old Main or the fountain, and visit Cornette Library. Sports fans will love seeing the Bain-Schaeffer Buffalo Stadium just north of campus where Thunder, the university mascot, performs the traditional buffalo run across the field on every touchdown as the Herdsmen handlers lose their footing.

LUNCH

Lunch at Buff’s

Continue the new Buff experience by grabbing a burger at local favorite, Buff’s just a block away from the WTAMU campus. Known for its juicy burgers, classic cherry limeades, and irresistible fried pies, it’s the perfect spot to fuel up after a day on campus.

AFTERNOON

Afternoon Hike

After lunch, head out to Palo Duro Canyon for an afternoon hike to the park’s Big Cave, or for those with a little more energy, hike the Rock Garden Trail — a local favorite that hike’s from the base to the rim of the canyon.

EVENING

Dinner at The Lumberyard

The Lumberyard is a student favorite in Canyon. It’s the perfect hangout for grabbing loaded cheesesteaks, wings, and craft beer with friends. With live music, a self-pour beer wall, fire pits, games like cornhole and giant Jenga, and a laid-back vibe, it’s ideal for winding down after class, celebrating the weekend, or meeting new people. Horseback Ride or Jeep Tour (call ahead, tickets required)

For a unique perspective on the Canyon, consider a guided horseback ride or Jeep Tour through the canyon. 1hr, 2hr, and 3hr options are available as you explore the picturesque backlands of the canyon.

Dinner at Pondaseta Brewing Company

Pondaseta Brewing Co. in Canyon is the perfect student hangout after a long day. Located in the historic Santa Fe Train Depot, it offers a great lineup of craft beers, ciders, and seltzers on tap. Kick back on the patio, grab bites from the kitchen or food truck, and enjoy live music in a laid-back, welcoming vibe.
